Students Praise Choice of Commencement Speaker
Boston College Law School announced that U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey was chosen to speak at the 2008 Law School Commencement, to be held on May 23.
Members of the Class of 2008 largely praised Garvey's selection.
"Mukasey is an excellent choice. He has a long record of public service as a prosecutor, judge, and now the country's Attorney General," said Matt Prasse '08, who served as President of the BC Law's Federalist Society in 2006-07. "I am looking forward to hearing his remarks," he continued.
Some students expressed concern with Attorney General Mukasey's remarks about waterboarding. Nevertheless, these students were happy with the choice.
"While I was disappointed with Mr. Mukasey's refusal to unequivocally state that waterboarding is "torture" because he did not want to provide any further basis for executive branch liability on the matter, I have been heartened by his independence thus far and how much he has done to restore the credibility of the Department of Justice in such a short period of time," said Greg Nannery '08. In 2006-07, Nannery served as Vice-President of BC Law's American Constitution Society.
The selection of Mukasey was made by Dean of BC Law John Garvey. Although Dean Garvey has taken suggestions from students about potential speakers in years past, the opportunity to have the Attorney General of the United States speak at this year's Commencement made such discussions a non-issue, said Nate Kenyon, BC Law's Director of Marketing and Communications.
