American Constitution Society and Law School to Co-Sponsor Interrogation Event
Boston College Law School's American Constitution Society and the Law School itself released the following statement today announcing an event to discuss the legal issues raised by inviting Attorney General Mukasey to speak at Commencement:
"The recent announcement of the selection of US Attorney General Michael Mukasey as BC Law's Commencement Speaker has generated a spirited debate among faculty and students on the substantive issues surrounding his confirmation by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Law School and BC Law's American Constitution Society are putting together an event focused on these issues, including the legality of interrogation techniques in the fight against terror and the role of government lawyers in defending or preserving the government's legal position on such questions. The event will take place on Thursday, March 13 at 12:30 pm. More details will be announced about this open forum as soon as they are available."
Reached for comment, Austin Evers, president of ACS on campus*, said, "I'm very excited that ACS can contribute to this discussion and to the BC Law community. I think this is an important conversation for us to have at this time." The Eagleionline Editorial Board advocated an open discussion of these and other issues earlier this week.
*Austin is also Managing Editor of Eagleionline but has worked in a separate capacity on this event.
