Message to the BC Law Community from Lambda

As the executive board of the Lambda organization at Boston College Law School, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the BC Law student body and faculty who have provided guidance and support for our organization throughout the years. In particular, we would like to thank those who participated in our recent Faces campaign highlighting support for equality for LGBT students and faculty. We think the strong, positive message of support helped incoming 1L students feel welcome and appreciated. It also reconfirmed for the 2L and 3L students that BC Law is an open-minded and welcoming place.
Obviously, we are saddened by the results of the referendum overturning same-sex marriage in Maine last night, where scare tactics and lies prevailed over fairness and the truth. Yet we remain hopeful that one day, civil equality and tolerance will win out over discrimination and fear. That hope is lifted by the support we have generously been given from fellow students and faculty.
The struggle for true civil equality will be finished neither quickly, nor easily. However, history has shown that in all great battles for civil rights and equal treatment under the law, equality and justice prevail. This battle will be no different. Same sex couples, contrary to what some may want others to believe, are capable of loving, lasting relationships and we form safe, healthy and loving family units. Our relationships are no different in substance and meaning than anyone else’s. The vote in Maine last night does nothing to negate that reality and we know that one day the law everywhere will reflect this human truth.
We want you to know that we appreciate the support and encouragement you have given and we are proud to walk the same halls with so many wonderful people.
Thank you,
