Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Dir: Tim Burton
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp
19-year-old Alice goes back to wonderland to fight the Jabberwocky, this time along a linear plot and in 3-D. The overall consensus goes something like this:
“It was … good.” - Ben Zhao
“It was good, but didn’t cut the cheese.” - Satt Mu
“I thought we were going to watch it together?” - Merid Mekonnen
I personally liked the disjointed non-linear plot of the original movie and how impossible it was. What do you say to someone who asks, “what was the movie about?” It’s almost impossible.
In this movie, however, Alice talks about “imagining impossible things” while progressing along a very predictable plotline. Frankly, I expected something more disjointed and impossible from Burton, a man of many imaginations, but I suppose it’s just not that kind of movie. There’s a certain appeal to simple plots, something like the dining hall coffee loaded with french vanilla creamer. It’s no Stumptown coffee, but still, there’s a sense of satisfaction that keeps law students going through those afternoon classes.
So if you’re in the mood for something straightforward, go for it. Overall, however, the 3-D effects weren’t enough to convince me that the movie was more interesting than it was.
