The BLT: The Blog of LegalTimes, reported today that Attorney General Mukasey will speak about ethics at Friday’s commencement. Referencing an unamed offical at the Justice Department, author wrote that Mukasey “will discuss the ethical responsibilities of being a lawyer, especially in the complex area of national security.”

Survey Results: Commencement Speaker Selection Process

How do you feel about the process used to select this year’s commencment speaker? Earlier this week, Eagleionline asked students, alumni, and members of the faculty, staff and administration of Boston College Law School a series of questions through Eagleionline about BC Law’s commencement ceremonies in general and the 2008 ceremony in particular.
Yesterday, Eagleionline analyzed the quantiative component of the survey, which asked “Do you support having attorney General Mukasey speak at this year’s commencement?”
In addition, Eagleionline analyzed the survey’s first optional open-ended question: “What quality or qualities do you look for in a commencement speaker?”
Today, we survey the answers to the second open-ended question: “ How do you feel about the process used to select this year’s commencment speaker?” More below the fold…
Commencement Survey Results

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Eagleionline asked students, alumni, and members of the faculty, staff and administration of Boston College Law School a series of questions about BC Law’s commencement ceremonies in general and the 2008 ceremony in particular.
Eagleionline conducted the survey in response to a request from a member of the Class of 2008 to collect some non-anecdotal evidence on the subject.
The survey results appear below the fold. More complete analysis, as well as raw data, will be published throughout the week.

When and where will Eagleionline elect its new Editorial Board?
Eagleionline will elect its Editorial Board for the 2008-09 Academic Year on Wednesday, April 2, at 1:00 p.m. in East Wing 115A.
Who is eligible to vote in the Eagleionline election?
All students, faculty and staff at Boston College Law School community who attend the meeting are eligible to vote.
Garvey Proposes "Institutional Pluralism"
In a speech in January at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Schools (AALS) in New York Dean of Boston College Law School and AALS President John Garvey talked about shifting the axis of the legal academy’s discussion over diversity. Instead of focusing on diversity within law schools, Garvey proposed cultivating differences among them.
Running for a Cause
For the past week Guillaume Buell ‘09 has made Boston College Law School’s cafe his second office. His first, in the basement of Stuart, belongs to the Federalist Society. (Buell currently serves as President of that organization.)
In the cafe, however, Buell is not talking Con Law or politics — he’s talking to people everyday about eradicating melanoma by educating children and the community about prevention and detection of skin cancer.
LSA Election Season Begins
Posted below is the list of candidates for LSA positions. One person will be chosen from each category except for the 2L and 3L reps where three people will be chosen. V.P., Secretary, and 3L rep Slots are uncontested, while the treasurer position appears to be the most competitive. Look for more coverage over the next week.
EU Moot Court Team Continues BCLS String of Moot Court Successes
The EU Moot Court Team, comprised of David Bartholomew ‘08, Kate Bartlett ‘08, John Martin ‘08 and Ramiz Shlah ‘08, made it to the finals of the regional competition held in Bangor, Wales this past Saturday. The EU Moot Court Competition is the second largest law school moot in the world.

NEWTON, MA — Twenty-two members of the Boston College Law School faculty broke with the Dean of Boston College Law School, John Garvey, today over the recent invitation of Attorney General Michael Mukasey to speak at the school’s 2008 Commencement Ceremony.

Click to enlargeOn January 23, Dean Garvey said of Mukasey “I cannot imagine a better role model for the class of 2008.” Though the comment was subsequently withdrawn, on March 11 it was restored to Boston College Law School’s website.
Course Evaluations To Be Released
Eagleionline has confirmed that the law school will release some course evaluations data beginning this semester. The new policy marks a sea change from the existing system, which is completely opaque to the student body.
Garvey Addresses Mukasey Situation
John Garvey, Dean of Boston College Law School, released a memo this evening regarding the selection of the United States Attorney General as the 2008 Commencement Speaker. This memo appeared on the law school’s website. It represents the Garvey administration’s first public statement on the Mukasey situation since January 24, when the selection was originally announced.
