All Not Quiet on the Newton Front

bcshield.jpgBy Jesse Stellato

The administration of Boston College Law School is being challenged by alumni for their allegedly improper solicitation of telephonic voting by alumni.

The vote at stake concerns the reconstitution of the existing Alumni Council.

D.F. King, a proxy solicitation firm, was recently authorized by the Administration to reach out to alumni by phone, make them aware of the BC Law Magazine and the ballot, answer any questions alumni might have, and urge them to vote.

The firm has also been authorized to record a "yes" or "no" vote if the alumnae or alumnus wants to vote immediately.

But according to Brian Cardoza '87, the solicitation of telephonic voting serves “only to undermine the integrity of this vote.”

Update Letter from John Weaver

Here is an update on the letter from John Weaver of the Law Revue.
Dear Class of 2010,
My name is John Weaver, and I'm one of the directors of the Law Revue Show this year (note the spelling on "revue"). Let me apologize for an email that had wonderful intentions of being amusing, but ended with the sad reality of being only confusing. It was sent by a well-meaning member of the Law Revue Show, who didn't quite think the whole endeavor through. He hoped to send a tongue in cheek email and attachment advertising the Law Revue Show, not realizing that most recipients would look at the email, realize it wasn't for them, and never get the joke in the attachment. We're very sorry for any inconvenience or confusion.

Breaking News: Caveat Lector

All 1Ls received an e-mail that is a draft of a letter to be sent to "young superstars" in the 1L class who are being considered for the Boston College Law Review. The letter states that it will be sent to these superstars as a result of their grades from the first semester and the comments of their writing teachers.  This letter appears to be a joke from the Law Revue as seen by the suggested edits on draft. The letter is addressed to Erin Voyik and  John Frank Weaver from the Boston College Law Rev. We will update as we learn more about this letter.

A comment from a 2L Law Review Member: "I think the letter is funny but it hits really close to home.  Those of us on the Law Review take our elitism very seriously.  In all seriousness though, 1Ls should know that not all members of the Law Review would have made the cut after first semester, yours truly included."

Mood Over Mukasey Changes

By Jesse Stellato

There is some evidence that the mood at Boston College Law School is changing over the recent selection of Attorney General Michael Mukasey to speak at the 2008 Law School Commencement exercises.

Though students' first reaction was one of general, but not wholly unqualified praise, some students and alumni are now speaking out against the administration.

facebook.jpg"While the process [of selecting Mukasey] alone appears to have been deeply flawed, the substance of the decision and the message it sends to the BCLS Community raises fundamental questions about the identity of the institution," said Dan Roth '04 in an email.

Roth has also started a group, "Waterboarding IS torture," on Facebook. The group currently has nine members, including Professor Ruth-Arlene W. Howe

Waterboarding on Campus: A-okay?

I am very disappointed in both Boston College Law School for its selection of Attorney General Michael Mukasey as our 2008 commencement speaker and its student body for the reprehensible apathy it has shown with regard to the issue. As many of my classmates do not seem to recall—and so I will remind them here—Mr. Mukasey famously dodged a question of water-boarding during his Senate confirmation hearing, refusing to say whether the interrogation technique amounts to torture. (Mr. Mukasey, however, when asked by Edward Kennedy ‘would water-boarding be torture if it was done to you?’ responded ‘I would feel that it was.’) [2]

Amazing Chipotle

chipotle.jpgDo you know what’s delicious? Chipotle in your stomach. Do you know what is even better? A free burrito with all the fixins. Today, I had the wonderful pleasure of receiving a free burrito from Chipotle to celebrate their new store in Cleveland Circle. They do not even charge for the always added cost of guacamole. What kind of person doesn't want free guacamole? For the rest of the day, you can grab a free burrito and drink at the new store on Beacon Street. I challenge you to sit with a glorious large free burrito and not smile at life. It is a horribly gloomy day and there is a long line, but it is absolutely worth it. In fact, they are not even sticklers about having more than one burrito. You can hop back on line as many times as you want. I even heard a story about some avid burrito eater consuming six in 30 minutes this morning. Why don’t you improve your life with a little free burrito?

Overheard in BC

Updated on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 01:25PM by Registered CommenterEagleionline

By Jesse Stellato

There hasn't been too much drama at Boston College Law School this month. Dean Garvey gave a diplomatic State of the School speech, but chose not to address the issue of student access to course evaluations. Perhaps it was well he didn't, though, because any mention of student access to course evaluations these days will lead to a discussion of those factually-accurate-but-arguably-misleading emails 1Ls and others received at the end of last semester. Is trickery afoot? Probably not, but perhaps later this week we will revisit this issue anyway. Feel free to send us tips.
