BC Law faces some big choices this week.

Starting tomorrow, we’ll elect our new LSA officers. While I’m well aware that many would disagree that this is a “big choice,” few people realize that they are in fact invested in the LSA, and indeed, in this election.

If you’re reading this and you’re a student at BC Law, you gave the LSA about $84 this year (of the $110 Law Student Association fee paid by every student, 76% goes directly to the LSA). By the time you’ve graduated, you’ll have given over $250 to the LSA – perhaps more, when one also considers additional funding given to the LSA by the Law School.

This is your hard earned cash, so before you vote, ask yourself: who do you want spending your money?

I hope you’ll entrust me with this responsibility and work with me in the coming year to make sure your money is spent with your interests in mind.

I had the opportunity to speak with people I don’t always get the chance to speak with, and I enjoyed hearing your input and your ideas about what you expect from your LSA in the year ahead.

Like Lauren and Matt, the President and Vice-President this past year, I seek this role without having had direct experience on the LSA Elected Board; the experience that I bring to the table comes from the work I have done on behalf of the student body and the school in various roles. This past year alone, I have:

Coordinated and led the LSA mentoring program;

Created and maintained the LSA’s first 1L Newsletter;

Organized a nationally recognized Senate Candidates Forum;

Served as the President of Amnesty International;

Served as a chair of the LSA New Students Committee.

The work I have done this year gave me the opportunity to interact with students, faculty, administration, and alumni; I also was able to represent the student body and this school as a whole. Combined with my having attended nearly every LSA Board Meeting first semester (class conflict this semester), I am ready to take on the role of serving as your LSA President.

I agree with what’s been said about not making promises that are beyond the scope of this position to keep. Much of what I would like to do will depend on the input I receive from you and the new Elected Board, and also on our budget. The goals that I do have break into four main categories:

Fighting for you to efficiently meet your needs: The LSA is a tremendous resource for students, but we can do a better job of addressing your concerns and empowering our student groups to fulfill their greatest potential, whether it’s by providing input, resources, or representing your voice to the administration.

Working with you to develop new initiatives and programs: I was able to develop “Dylan’s 1L Newsletter” by expanding my role as a chair of the New Students Committee; and I was able to strengthen Amnesty International with a limited budget, limited resources, and great teamwork. As your LSA president, I will use these experiences to be the best resource I can be for individual students or student groups as they strive to follow through on their own goals and initiatives.

Responding to you to make BC Law the best experience possible: I would not have been able to accomplish what I did this year without the input and support of you, our student body. I want to continue to be as receptive as I can to your comments, concerns, questions, and ideas, and I hope we can organize and host a wide range of events.

Increasing the LSA’s transparency, accountability, and outreach: The above three goals are facilitated by this one. Beyond encouraging students to attend our meetings and our Town Hall event, there are ways to increase awareness of the work we are doing. Setting up a blog that chronicles our progress and lists the members of the Appointed Board and their email addresses, so that you can directly contact the appropriate LSA member, is one idea I would like to implement right away.

Given that campaigning ends at 11:59 tonight, I encourage you to learn more by reading my first Eagleionline post here; my second Eagleionline post here; or my candidate statement here.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you vote this week on Agora, and I ask you for your vote.

Thanks!

Since, for all intents and purposes, we go to high school (with the lockers, section cliques, cafeteria, and litany of rumors and gossip) the prom is the perfect cap to the atmosphere. Prom always turns into a more formally dressed bar review with drunken debauchery, sex behind curtains, shirtless pictures with Dean Garvey, and inappropriate dancing. It can either end in heartache or hook-up (be it enjoyable or regrettable), interspersed with drama, blackouts, photo booths, drunken yelling, a cheese plate, and the occasional loss of balance. Outside of formal drinking, and the prospect of some nice-nice, what makes or breaks a prom is the ambiance created by the music. So in lieu of an album review, I will review prom playlists.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how the profession of a dance DJ still exists, with the invention of the iPod, internet, last.fm, Pandora, and even simple mix CDs. Logic aside, they do still have a job. Instead of launching into a Nick Hornby-esque recitation of the do’s and don’ts of creating a mix, I will try to outline specifics of what I look for in the playlist. It is necessary to create a feel combining elements of a middle school dance party with club music, and

     There is a great deal that the LSA can do to advocate for law student needs with the administration at BC Law and at Boston College in general, and it is important to understand that the LSA does so with a variety of logistical, budgetary, and bureaucratic restraints on a regular basis. The best person to lead the LSA is not the candidate making the most promises to the student body, but the person equipped with the knowledge, experience, and track record to be an effective president.

Part I: Lists and Rules

It is February 15, the day after Valentine’s Day, and I have decided to begin my foray into online dating. Did the fact that I was single on a day when everyone was with their significant others play a part in my decision? Yes, but a small part. In response to this, I suppose I should start by introducing myself and assuring readers of a few things:

1) I’m not lonely. In fact, I’m usually surrounded by people and I suspect I go out more than most students at BCLS. I’m your average grad student who procrastinates, hangs out with friends, and occasionally goes clubbing/bar-hopping. Just last week, I met a girl at a club, got her number, and took her out on a date.[1] Why am I detailing my personal life? Because I’m insecure that you might think I’m a loser for doing this. Again, the preconceptions I have about joining OKCupid prevail.

2) I’m not desperate. My last girlfriend and I broke up not too long ago (but not so recently that this is my way of getting over her) and though 27 feels old when I realize my parents married at 25, 40 also happens to be the new 30. By that logic, I’m today’s version of a rebellious, recently licensed-to-drive, mid-pubescent, testosterone-filled 17-year-old.
