Among the quotes in the Heights article are the following:

“I didn’t really have an interest in being a dean as an abstract matter[.] The glory of it is not great enough to make it worth while and I love being a teacher. But being the dean of a law school as prominent as BC is something that I thought was worth giving up teaching and writing books.”

“The same things that attracted me to BC attracted me to Catholic[.] It’s the national university of the Catholic Church and I can’t imagine leaving this school to be president of just somewhere random.”

To be sure, there are rules of engagement and principles of national relations that can properly be considered by lawyers. And once in a while, the Supreme Court hands down an opinion addressing the the president’s war-making power. But the topic of war is more of a political question than a legal debate.

When it comes to punishment, though, lawyers may claim their rightful province. Deterrence, retribution, perhaps even justice — these are things we learn to consider from the start. And “contempt” and “rehabilitation,” well, those too are something we lawyers know more than a little about.

Find me a recent BCLS graduate who is having an enjoyable summer completing all of their barbri assignments and I will be shocked. It’s a particularly lovely experience learning new subjects such as NY Practice which you had no interaction with in law school. Occasionally, though, a lecture on torts or property will bring back some repressed memories/knowledge from 1L year. For those recent grads/alums looking for a distraction, tell us what courses and teachers are most helpful in studying for the bar.
